The TakeCHARGE Campaign is an annual public awareness initiative aimed at enhancing patient safety by empowering individuals to actively engage in their healthcare. By following the 5 Steps to Safer Health Care, people can become informed participants in their healthcare team.

Kicking off during Patient Safety Awareness Week, the second week of March, and culminating on International Patient Safety Day on September 17th, the campaign focuses on one of the five steps each month from April through August. This outreach continues throughout the year with additional educational materials, presentations, and programs provided by Pulse Center for Patient Safety Education & Advocacy.

The 5 Steps to Safer Healthcare are:

1. Understand & Complete Your Advance Directives
2. Keep a Record of Your Medical History & Current Medications
3. Prepare for Doctor Visits / Make A List of Questions
4. Prevent Infections / Ask Caregivers to Wash Their Hands
5. Use an Advocate / Be an Advocate for Others
